The race to cure long Covid, the world’s next health crisis

Nathalie MacDermott knew it was only a matter of time before she was struck down by coronavirus. She was a junior doctor in a London hospital when the virus crept into Britain. By the end of March 2020 she was bed-bound with Covid-19.

Initially her illness seemed unremarkable. “I experienced all the standard symptoms: fever, muscle aches, fatigue, breathlessness, loss of sense of taste and smell,” she recalls. Three weeks later, though still a little breathless, MacDermott, 39, returned to work. She presumed that was the end of her encounter with the virus.
